Simple DIY hack can prevent drivers from £5,000 fine

Drivers could be issued a fine of up to £5,000 for breaking a little-known motoring rule this summer.

Motorists could dodge thousands of pounds in fines by extending one vital tool ahead of the summer. Sun visors are installed in every car and are crucial to protect motorists' eyes from direct sunlight.

These are adjustable and can be moved up and down depending on the driver's eye line, but many could still struggle to find the best protection. Many may be unaware they can extend their sun visor and make it bigger, ensuring more of the windscreen is covered. These are sold in many high-street stores for less than £10 and can clip directly onto existing sun visors for a hassle-free setup.

Wilco Direct said their Streetwize Sun Visor Extender even offers two-in-one night and day protection against the impacts of glare.

They said: “This visor serves two purposes in one - a daytime visor and a night-time visor, making it a versatile addition to your car's interior.

“The daytime setting effectively blocks out harsh sunlight, reducing eye strain and providing a clear view of the road ahead. The night-time setting reduces glare from oncoming headlights, streetlights, and other bright sources, improving nighttime visibility and enhancing driving safety.”

Halfords also offers a similar product for around £8, with the experts admitting the tool is “designed to reduce glare from the sun”.

Experts at Prestone have warned a properly installed sun visor is even more critical at this time of the year.

They said: “The sun visor is there for a reason, so be sure to use it to block low winter sun, just as you would in the summer.

“Arguably, the sun visor becomes even more important during the months where the sun is lower in the sky, because of how piercing it can be.”

Rule 237 of the Highway Code clearly states drivers need to slow down or stop if they are dazzled by bright sun or headlights.

Driving without proper control of a vehicle or a full view of the road and traffic ahead is against the rules and could see motorists caught out.

Unlucky motorists could face a hefty fine with total charges ranging from £1,000 to £5,000.

In some situations, individuals are also at risk of having three penalty points lapped onto their driving licence.
