'I'm a driving instructor and you'll fail your test immediately if you do this'

An independent driving instructor has revealed three things which will lead to you failing your test immediately. "Do one of these three things on your driving test and you will fail," he said. "So try and avoid them."

Taking your driving test is one of the most nerve-wracking experiences anyone can go through, so it's forgivable to make a few little mistakes. Small things like waiting too long at a junction or not checking all three mirrors before making a manoeuvre won't lead to an automatic fail - but there are some more serious errors which will mean your test is a write-off and you'll have to try again.

And now one driving instructor has revealed three things which will lead to you failing your test immediately. David Thomas, an independent instructor is based in Stourbridge in the West Midlands, revealed the three things to avoid in a video on TikTok.

"Do one of these three things on your driving test and you will fail," he said. "So try and avoid them."

He continued: "Number one: driving way too slow around the streets, holding people up, being very hesitant at junctions and roundabouts, taking your time way too much. Because, you think you're being safe and the examiner is going to be happy with you, but they're not, because they don't wanna get stuck behind you tomorrow."

David added: "By the way, going too slow can be just as dangerous as driving too fast." One commenter asked what qualified as "too slow", to which David replied: "27/28 in a 30 [mph zone] is fine."

Another said: "Getting involved in a crash because you're being slow is crazy. Yet way too many people do it, not just students."

Continuing, David said: "Number two: not paying full attention to road signs and road markings. They're all there for you, you know, all this paint that's on the road, it's there to help you to know where to go, where to be, where not to be.

"And the road signs, you know, the metal things on posts, they are there to help you. And if you don't respond properly to these signs when they're telling you to slow down, or they're warning you that you're approaching a tight bend, then you can fail your driving test."

He added: "Be nosy when you're driving. It's really important to stay safe."

David continued: "And number three: passing things too closely when you're going too fast. I said a phrase today that I made up, and that is 'less room, less vroom'.

"You gotta go slow if you're going through things and it's really tight, really narrow. Don't rush, please.

"I heard somebody on Tiktok actually say, talking about a mess on the roads, if you're driving down the road and you see a messy situation ahead, don't drive into it, because you're going to be a part of the mess."

A commenter said: "My instructor always says 'less space, less pace', but I like yours too."

Concluding, David said: "I hope all this helps, because I want you to stop asking for lifts. Stop getting the bus in 2026, come on."
