People are only just realising that the black dots that frames car windshields are for, as they have a very important purpose, and are not just added to look good

People have only just learnt what the black dots on their car windscreens are there for, as they serve a really important job that many might not know about.

No matter how much you may think you know about your car, sometimes you may be surprised by a hidden feature that you may not have otherwise thought about. From the purpose of the buttons available on your dashboard, to the hidden features in the motor or in the car's design, you might be surprised by how many of them have a unique purpose - such as the black dots that frame the windscreen of every car.

This conversation recently started on X (formerly known as Twitter), when a user named Rasmulan shared a photo of a car windscreen with a circle around the black dots in question as he went on to ask the social media platform's own AI bot what the purpose of the dots were.

"Hey @Grok, what is the purpose of these black dots on a car windshield??" they wrote in their post, while sharing a photo of the dots in question.

The X AI robot replied: "Those black dots (called frit or dot matrix) are on the edge of most car windshields for a few key reasons."

It explained that the dots hide and protect the urethane adhesive/sealant that bonds the glass to the car body from UV rays. They also create a gradual transition from the solid black border to clear glass for a cleaner look.

Finally, it explained that the dots also help to spread heat evenly during manufacturing to avoid glass distortion.

According to the Windshield Company, the black dots on a car windscreen or car window are actually called frits. Frits are pieces of black-painted enamel that are baked into the borders of the glass during the manufacturing process.

Usually, they start out as a solid black panel at the edge of the glass before becoming small dots. They went on to explain the importance of the dots, which are the same as to what Grok explained on X.

Because of the dots' important job, they urged car owners to keep an eye on them, to make sure they don't begin to wear off or fade for any reason. If this happens, it is essential that you get them replaced as soon as possible.

This is because, without them, you run the risk of your windscreen falling out of place, they explained on their website.

People soon took to the comment section of the X post to share their thoughts, as some said they never knew this fact before.

"Wow, I just learnt something," one person commented. However, someone else argued: "STILL UNNECESSARY 'DESIGN'."
