Drivers urged to check car boot and save money before travelling this Easter

Millions are expected to hit the roads this Easter weekend and a quick check could save them money.

The Easter bank holiday weekend is just around the corner, and if you're planning a road trip, there's one vital check you shouldn't overlook. Millions of motorists are expected to take to the roads this weekend, with experts cautioning that even minor reductions in efficiency could significantly inflate your fuel costs.

Neil Atkinson, car expert at restoration firm Carrosserie, says that every additional 45kg can reduce fuel efficiency by 1% to 2%. This means that heavier vehicles demand more fuel to cover the same distance.

This becomes particularly pronounced when navigating stop-start city traffic or tackling undulating countryside roads.

"Many drivers don't realise how much weight affects fuel consumption," said Neil.

"Even a few extra passengers can make the engine work harder, particularly in urban traffic or on hills.

"It's not always obvious straight away, but over longer journeys - like those during the Easter getaway period - it can quietly add to your fuel bill."

He's not suggesting you leave Grandma at home, but before you set off, it's a good idea to check over your car and remove extra weight, reports the Express.

If you've had bags of clothes to go to the charity shop in the boot for weeks, leave them behind before you set off.

Even the smallest things can make a difference to your overall fuel efficiency and save you money over time.

He added that while sharing journeys can still reduce overall costs when fuel is split, drivers should be aware of the trade-off.

"A fully loaded vehicle will always be less efficient. Keeping weight down where possible is one of the simplest ways to improve fuel economy."

With petrol prices continuing to worry many families and motorists, minor adjustments while driving could produce a significant impact - just in time for one of the busiest motoring periods of the year.
