Drivers are now realising difference between single and double yellow lines

Ever wondered what a single and double yellow line means, as well as the big difference between them? One theory test expert recently gave a simple explanation

Whether you're an expert behind the wheel or learning to drive, it can be hard remembering parts of your theory test. Knowing the rules of the road are not just a legal requirement but can promise safety to yourself and others.

In the UK, there are plenty of road markings and signs which can get confusing to understand. But now one theory test expert shared the difference between single and double yellow lines, making it extremely straight-forward for drivers. The motoring guru, known as Annie, claimed many people think yellow signs mean 'no stopping' but that's where they're wrong.

In a TikTok video with her 1.2million followers, she began: "Loads of people think yellow signs mean no stopping but they don't, it's the red lines which mean no stopping."

Going into an explanation as to what yellow lines mean, Annie said it's 'no waiting' which states you must not stay there or leave the car in that spot.

She continued: "So on yellow lines you are allowed to stop your car, drop someone off but you have to drive away again, you can't leave your car there.

"So what about one yellow line? If there's one line that means no waiting sometimes. If you think about it, more paint means more danger, more restrictions. So one line is no waiting sometimes, two lines is no waiting all the time.

"If you see one line, you'll also see a sign which will say for example Monday to Saturday 9am-4pm. That means no waiting between Monday-Saturday 9am-4pm but other times you are allowed to park here."

Finishing her post, Annie concluded: "If you can remember if there's more paint, then there is going to be more danger, more restrictions."

Many people fled to the comments section, stating they didn't know the difference as Annie originally did the post to answer a query relating to single and double yellow lines.

What does the Highway Code say?

In the UK, the Highway Code states double yellow lines mean no waiting or parking at any time, while single yellow lines have restricting waiting at specific times.

Make sure you look for nearby signs, which, if absent, apply 24/7. Both allow stopping briefly to pick up/drop off passengers or load/unload, unless special kerb markings prohibit it.

The Highway Code says: "Inside a CPZ (Controlled Parking Zone), single yellow lines may not have individual signs, relying on entry signage instead.

"Always check the nearby small white rectangular yellow-bordered signs for specific time restrictions, particularly for single yellow lines."
