DVLA 'stolen or damaged' warning to Brits

Drivers across the UK have been issued a reminder

Motorists have been warned that they must do this quickly or they could risk a fine.

Drivers across the UK who have lost, damaged or had their driving licence stolen are being urged to act quickly – with the DVLA highlighting that a replacement can be ordered online in minutes. The DVLA issued the reminder to drivers across Britain, highlighting that anyone whose licence has gone missing should apply for a new one as soon as possible. In a message posted online, the agency said: “Have you lost your driving licence? Maybe it’s been stolen or damaged?”

Drivers can apply for a replacement online through the official Government website, with a new photocard licence costing £20.

However, the DVLA warns that anyone whose licence has been stolen should contact the police first before starting the replacement process.

Applicants may also be asked for details such as their driving licence number, National Insurance number or passport number.

In some cases the DVLA will allow motorists to reuse their passport photo when ordering a replacement licence – but only if the current licence is due to expire within two years and the driver has a valid UK passport.

Drivers must also give permission for the DVLA to access the passport photo before it can be used.

What happens after applying

Once an application has been submitted, the DVLA says it will send a confirmation email, and most replacement licences arrive within three weeks.

However, it warns the process could take longer if medical or personal details need to be checked.

The agency also issued an important reminder to drivers who later find their missing licence.

Anyone who locates their old card after applying for a replacement must return it to the DVLA, explaining what has happened.

Other ways to apply

Drivers with older paper licences must send identity documents and a passport-style photo when applying for a replacement.

The DVLA stressed that anyone who loses their licence should not delay – warning that motorists should always ensure they hold a valid and up-to-date driving licence before getting behind the wheel.
