Drivers alerted to '24 hours' rule as ignoring it could get you banned from roads

Drivers could be banned from driving, given points or a fine if they to not adhere to the rule

The Department for Transport (DfT) has urged people to remember a '24-hour' rule. Failure to act on this could see you banned from driving.

According to the department, under Rule 286 and 287 of the Highway Code, you must "give your name and address at the time of the collision, report it to the police as soon as reasonably practicable, and in any case within 24 hours."

Talking about people involved in a collision, it explains that there are two things you must do. You should stop in a safe place and give key details.

It adds: "You can call 101 to report the accident or complete an online form. You can find out which police force you need to contact on Police.uk."

Rule 287 reads similarly and notes: "If another person is injured and you do not produce your insurance certificate at the time of the crash to a police officer or to anyone having reasonable grounds to request it, you MUST
