DVLA 'don't forget' warning to millions

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has issued a reminder for drivers

Millions of motorists are being urged to check they are signed up to a key online account that could help them avoid fines, missed MOTs and driving licence headaches.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has issued a brand new reminder for drivers to add their vehicles to their official online profile so they can keep track of vital information. In a post on X, it said: “Don’t forget to add your vehicles to your Driver and vehicles account.

"You can then view your vehicle details, including when your MOT expires.

"Not signed up yet? It’s easy.”

The alert comes as millions rely on reminders to ensure they do not accidentally drive without a valid MOT or fall foul of vehicle tax rules.

However, those who pay vehicle tax by direct debit cannot set up vehicle tax reminders through the account.

Don’t forget to add your vehicles to your Driver and vehicles account.

You can then view your vehicle details, including when your MOT expires.

Who can use it

Users may be asked to prove their identity when signing in - usually using photo ID such as a passport or driving licence - to keep details secure.

Why it matters

Failing to keep on top of MOT or tax deadlines can prove costly. Driving without a valid MOT can result in a fine of up to £1,000, while keeping a vehicle without taxing it - unless it has been declared off the road (SORN) - can trigger penalties.

The DVLA says drivers can still check certain information, such as vehicle tax status or share driving licence details, without creating an account.

But with more services moving online and reminders increasingly digital, the agency is urging motorists not to miss out.
