Drivers alerted as 'important' DVLA change coming in March

Four key changes to driving tests are set to be implemented this spring

Drivers in the UK have been alerted to some “important” changes starting next month. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) issued a reminder about driving test booking rules.

In a post made to social media platform X, the DVLA explained: “Important changes to driving test booking rules are coming.” It detailed one specific alteration, stating: “From 31 March 2026, learner drivers and approved driving instructors (ADIs) will only be able to make two changes to a driving test booking.”

But this is not the only change being made to how people can book driving tests. On the GOV.UK website, it listed four key changes to know.

GOV.UK clarified: “The new rules for booking and managing car driving tests will be introduced from spring 2026. The exact dates will be confirmed nearer the time.”

GOV.UK said: “From later in spring 2026, you will need to book your car driving test yourself on GOV.UK. Your driving instructor will not be able to book it for you.”

GOV.UK added: “From 31 March 2026, you will only be able to make two changes to your existing booking. If you’ve already used all changes under the current rules, you will be able to make two more changes from 31 March 2026.

“From later in spring 2026, you will only be able to move your test to centres near to where you originally booked. Only use your limited changes for genuine needs or emergencies.”

If you need to make more changes after you have used your two changes, you will have to cancel your test and book a new one. You will get a full refund if you do it at least 10 full working days’ before the test date.
