February can often be a tiresome month in the UK. We have been dealing with the cold for months now, but it gets worse for drivers when icy weather hits. Drivers have to deal with chipping ice off car windscreens and doors almost every morning at this time of year, which can be time-consuming.
However, the experts at Ninja Deicer have shared there is a “effective and affordable” method to stop ice forming on cars at night using just a little vinegar and a piece of onion. They said: “The idea behind spraying vinegar on your windshield and windows the night before is that it freezes at a lower temperature than water, so they aren't as likely to frost over while you're sleeping. And, the oil from a cut onion rubbed generously across the glass can keep Jack Frost from riming your windows.”
Vinegar contains a substance called acetic acid, which can lower the freezing point of water and make ice melt at a much faster rate.
Spraying a little vinegar on a car window will form a light coating on a car surface and make can help stop ice being able to form as sub-zero temperatures.
Onions contain sulphur compounds are hygroscopic, which means they trap water and create tiny imperfections on a surface.
These imperfections make it harder for ice to form into crystals and prevent frost from being able to form on a car surface.
All you need to do is mix three parts vinegar and one part water, then place it in a spray bottle. Spray a thin, even layer of the vinegar solution along a car windscreen and windows the night before.
Cut an onion in half and rub the faced-down ride slightly across the glass, and it should create a layer of protection to keep a car frost-free overnight.
It will also help to cover your windscreen a night to prevent ice forming, but you do not need to purchase anything as blankets or tablecloths are good enough to stop crystallisation.
Drivers should also know that where you park will also affect how icy your car becomes, and it is highly recommended to always keep your car facing east if you can.
The expert said: “The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. If your windshield is facing the sun as it rises, there's a chance that any ice formed in the night will melt before you wake up in the morning.”
Having to chip ice off your car every day can get annoying, but trying out this simple method is one of the easiest ways to keep ice away without having to spend any money.
