Drivers urged to buy petrol before Friday morning

Snow is set to return to parts of the UK on Friday so getting fuelled up ready for disruption is a good strategy out on the roads.

Drivers are being urged to fill up their car with petrol or diesel before Friday morning as a fresh batch of snow forecasts could bring travel disruption to certain parts of the UK this Friday.

The Met Office has forecast snow for most of Scotland and large swathes of northern England from the early hours of Friday morning, just after midnight.

Though the snow will peak at about 12.45am on Friday, the latest forecast maps suggest it could linger through various areas until early on Saturday.

While there are no formal coloured warnings in place as yet, areas including much of Scotland and areas including North Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cumbria and North Wales could see snow according to the Met Office maps, especially on high ground.

British Gas, in its advice on preparing for heavy snow, urges drivers to keep their tank half full at least, and to check their car over beforfe making any journey.

It says: "Have your brakes, heater, tyres and windscreen wipers checked to make sure they're in good working order before winter.

"And if you can keep your fuel tank half full during snowy conditions, all the better."

It also urges drivers to pack an emergency kit in their car. It says: "De-icer, scrapers, wiper fluid and anti-freeze will all come in handy if you need to drive during a cold snap.

"You might even want to keep some jump leads in the boot in case your car doesn’t start.

"And before going on any journeys, make sure you’ve got some food, water, a torch, your phone and charger, plus a blanket or two with you."

The Met Office forecast for Thursday says: "Rain moves northwards through the day, turning heavy in places and again, possible snow across north Wales, the Pennines and Scottish mountains. Winds staying strong in the north. Average temperatures."

And on Friday, it adds: "Wintry hazards continuing for the northern half of the UK, with outbreaks of rain in the south. Some drier spells on Saturday, but remaining mostly cloudy into the weekend."
