RAC sends 'urgent' message about dashboard warning lights you must never ignore

The motoring experts at RAC shared what you need to do about these dashboard warning lights to "avoid a headache". So how many of these do you already know about?

Have you ever noticed these warning lights flashing up on your dashboard? You might remember doing your theory test, but a lot of these messages on your car are quite important to know as they could signify something's wrong.

Whether it's information about your engine, or a seatbelt which needs doing, it's crucial knowing exactly what each of these mean. Now the motoring experts at RAC shared a handy guide to "avoid a headache" if you're constantly getting flashed by your dashboard. Posting to 4,000 followers on TikTok, there are yellow lights which are cautionary, and red that must be sorted urgently.

The caption read: "Getting flashed by your dash? Here's what you need to know about dashboard warning lights to avoid a headache."

In the clip, it added: "Your guide to warning lights. Warning lights are colour-coded. Yellow for caution, red for urgent. If you see a yellow warning light – check the right brake lamp."

The experts added: "Take extra care when driving. Check for advice in your handbook. Get the problem looked at ASAP." Meanwhile any red warning lights are urgent.

RAC continued: "Pull over and stop driving. Yellow – call on RAC Mobile Mechanic. Red – Report a breakdown via myRAC."

Dashboard warning lights are there to tell you there's something wrong with your car. There are so many different warning symbols on your dashboard so it can be difficult to know how to identify a problem.

Always remember a series of coloured lights will indicate there's a problem, otherwise RAC suggests following this traffic light colour system:

If you start your vehicle, it can be normal for the warning lights to flash up briefly. However, if one or more of these lights remain, then you might have to seek professional help from your local garage.

Ensure you have breakdown cover and if you're travelling abroad, you might be able to get breakdown cover, whether it's through RAC or your insurance. Just remember it's important to act if you see any warning lights on your dashboard.
