Three-step guidance from police for driving on black ice

Derbyshire Constabulary has issued crucial advice for drivers facing hazardous winter conditions, as the Met Office warns wintry showers and ice could still be present across many parts of the UK this weekend

Treacherous weather conditions are set to persist throughout the weekend, leaving countless motorists bracing themselves for a raft of difficult driving scenarios. The Met Office has issued warnings that 'wintry showers' and icy surfaces could linger across large swathes of the UK after a brutal cold spell this week sent temperatures tumbling.

In response, police forces nationwide are urging drivers to make certain both they and their vehicles are properly equipped to handle any dangerous conditions lurking on the roads. Guidance issued by Derbyshire Constabulary emphasises that even experienced motorists can be caught off guard by hazards like black ice, potentially putting themselves and fellow road users in greater danger.

The force also points out that numerous newly qualified drivers may be experiencing their maiden winter behind the wheel, potentially leaving them ill-equipped for the challenges ahead. Thankfully, Derbyshire Constabulary has issued comprehensive advice to help all drivers remain safe, whatever vehicle they're piloting or however much experience they've clocked up.

For those behind the wheel of a manual motor, Derbyshire Police recommends bearing three crucial points in mind when setting off in icy conditions. Officers advise motorists to "pull away slowly, use second gear if required to keep the revs low and maintain traction" whilst gently releasing the clutch to prevent the wheels from spinning.

When your car is in motion, drivers of manual vehicles should accelerate smoothly, keep revs low, and shift into higher gears as soon as practical. This guidance applies to automatic car drivers too, who should maintain steady speeds and stay alert on bends and inclines to ensure gradual, controlled acceleration and braking.

The Highway Code reinforces this approach, with rule 231 stating that drivers should: "Drive extremely carefully when the roads are icy. Avoid sudden actions as these could cause loss of control."

It advises motorists to travel at reduced speeds in the highest gear possible whilst accelerating and braking 'very gently'. When negotiating bends, drivers are told to 'brake progressively' on the straight section before reaching a corner whilst steering smoothly around the bend.

Rule 228 of the Highway Code also encourages drivers to plan ahead and only venture out in snowy and icy conditions if absolutely necessary. It adds: "If it is [essential] take great care and allow more time for your journey. Take an emergency kit of de-icer and ice scraper, torch, warm clothing and boots, first aid kit, jump leads and a shovel, together with a warm drink and emergency food in case you get stuck or your vehicle breaks down."
