‘I’m a cars expert - the best vehicles for learner drivers to pass test revealed'

EXCLUSIVE: The best cars for learner drivers have been revealed, with models from Ford, Vauxhall and Volkswagen some of the best options.

A motoring expert has revealed the best cars for learner drivers desperate to pass their test, with popular models from Ford, Vauxhall and Volkswagen among the top picks. Speaking exclusively to the Express, James Armstrong, young driver expert at Veygo stressed learning to drive was now “more expensive than ever for families”, making picking the first car so important.

He suggested that “lower-powered engines” with good fuel economy and low insurance groups are ideal for learner drivers looking for the perfect model. James explained that there were a bunch of “brilliant, budget-friendly models” on the market, but picked out some of his favourites.

James stressed that the UK’s long-time best-selling model remains a firm favourite for learner drivers. He praised the model for its light clutch, precise steering and excellent visibility which makes the Focus easy to handle during early lessons.

He stressed that the 1.0L EcoBoost was economical without being overwhelming, while the vehicle was also smooth to drive, instructor-friendly and widely available.

James has explained that the Corsa is compact, nimble and ideal for narrow UK roads and is even one of the most common cars used by instructors. The model has also been praised for having light steering, comfortable driving position and extra luxuries such as a modern infotainment system.

However, James said that some of the older base trims can feel quite basic which may put off learners looking for some style.

Next, James picked out the Volkswagen Polo, explaining the model offers a “premium-feeling” for learner drivers. He said that the Polo is known for stability and reassurance, making it ideal for more nervous drivers.

In particular, James said the model featured a high-quality interior and a strong safety kit but may come with high running costs.

James selected the Hyundai i10 as his “ top pick for city driving” thanks to its compact size, light steering and superb ease of parking. However, he also suggested the Kia Picanto, Toyota Yaris,  Peugeot 208 and Renault Clio as superb alternatives,

James said: “Choosing a learner-friendly car with a small engine, low insurance group and good visibility can make a real difference – especially at a time when many parents are already spending hundreds on lessons and tests.

“Cars like the Fiesta, i10 and Picanto are excellent budget-conscious options that give learners confidence without adding unnecessary costs.”
