Every petrol and diesel driver faces Christmas blow as pump prices hit new highs

Petrol and diesel fuel costs are on the up with motorists across the UK set to feel the effects in the run up to Christmasd this December.

Every petrol and diesel driver in the UK could face higher fuel pump prices in the run-up to Christmas, according to leading experts. Analysis from Quotezone warns that cold weather and higher demand could push prices even higher through December.

According to experts, motorists in the nation are paying the highest price to fill up than at any time over the past eight months. Pump prices increased by 2.17p in November, which saw the average cost of fuel rising to 137.17p per litre – the highest price since mid-March.

Greg Wilson, car insurance expert and CEO of Quotezone.co.uk said: “Many drivers accept rising fuel costs as something they just have to try and budget for, but there’s actually a lot we can all be doing to help stretch every litre further.

“Small changes to how we drive can make a big difference, especially over Christmas when trips tend to be longer and finances are already tight. Checking tyre pressure, planning routes to avoid congestion, and reducing unnecessary idling are simple steps that can save both fuel and money. Even little adjustments, like gentle acceleration and keeping your car well maintained, add up over time.”

According to recent analysis from the RAC, the cost of filling a family petrol car is up by over £1 from October. Costs now stand at £75.44, a £1.19 increase from the £74.25 charged to motorists at the end of October.

Meanwhile, a full diesel refill will cost drivers around £80.61 on average, up £2.11 since the start of the month.

RAC head of policy Simon Williams recently explained that motorists hoping to visit family and friends this December could feel the sting.

They said: “Drivers will be disappointed to see prices at the pumps rise so sharply in the run-up to festive period. Not only is it one of the most expensive times of the year, it’s also a time when many of us drive hundreds of miles to celebrate with family and friends over the extended break, making it a costly Christmas on the roads.”
