Automotive enthusiasts love driving cars that mirror their personality, and few things make that clearer than a personalized license plate. In Idaho, however, more than 600 drivers who tried to express themselves through custom tags were told no this year.
More: The One License Plate Indiana Drivers Are Fighting To Get
Like most others, the Gem State allows drivers to customize plates. They cost $25 to apply for and $15 to renew annually, which means that they’re basically free since that’s what normal plates cost anyway. But, as with everything else these days, there are limits.
What’s Off the Table?
Idaho law prohibits punctuation, special characters, the letter “Q”, and any language deemed obscene, insulting, racially or sexually prejudicial, or sexually suggestive. References to bodily functions, acts of violence, illegal substances, or intimate body parts are also banned.
So what did some Idahoans try to put on their plates in 2025? Several tried to sneak in profanity of one kind or another. 1DA H0E, N0TDAH0, YUTHAH0, 0F0XGVN, 5HIT5HW, and BDASM0M all ended up on the cutting-room floor. Sexual innuendo was a big issue, too.

What Didn’t Make the Cut?
0GWANG, 2INCHPP, B00BIEZ, 8HER0UT, MSTRBTR, and BJ69R were all rejected by the state. Bodily functions that we all know exist were too hardcore as well. They include 1FARTD, 0LEFART, and B00GIE1. That’s right folks, Boogie 1 is just too rough for public roads.
According to the Idaho Statesman, the DMV reviews every request in two stages: technical staff first, followed by supervisors. If a request is denied, applicants can submit up to three alternatives and have the right to appeal through a formal hearing.
So at the end of the day, while locals might be willing to submit a form and pay their dues, they don’t get complete freedom to have whatever plate they want.
