IndyCar Returns to Phoenix Raceway with Tire Test Ahead of 2026 Season

IndyCar hits the iconic one-mile Phoenix oval this week with Scott Dixon leading testing for the March race. Firestone teams up with the series to fine-tune tire and tech setups on the newly repaved track.

IndyCar is back at Phoenix Raceway for the first time in years, kicking things off with a two-day test session this Thursday and Friday. The focus? Running through different tire compounds and technical setups to nail down the perfect formula for the March 7 race weekend.

Scott Dixon, Chip Ganassi Racing's ace and 2016 Phoenix winner is heading the testing effort. Alongside him, Ed Carpenter Racing’s Alexander Rossi will pilot the modern DW12 chassis, which now features hybrid powertrains and the Firestone Aeroscreen. Both bring experience and speed to help Firestone and IndyCar optimize tire performance on the recently resurfaced oval.

Phoenix underwent repaving and revamped turns, including the notable “Dogleg,” which allows deeper corner cuts on the backstretch. While NASCAR drivers dive low, IndyCars will likely stick closer to the traditional racing line due to their different ride height and downforce needs.

Handling tire wear on the rougher surface and adjusting downforce with new aero packages are key challenges. Testing will be split into short runs on day one and longer stints on day two to simulate race conditions.

IndyCar’s return promises fast, strategic racing on the oval that saw legends battle in the past. With Dixon and Rossi at the controls during testing, the stage is set for an intense comeback at Phoenix in March.
