The WRC won't return to CER after this week, but it might not be long before it's back in Germany

Central European Rally fans sit under something of a cloud this week. Round 12 of this year’s World Rally Championship represents year three of a three-year deal for the Passau-based asphalt event.
From Sunday, the WRC dream is done with funding for rallying’s groundbreaking German-Austrian-Czech alliance apparently drying up.
What next?
How about a WRC counter based at the Nürburgring circuit? That would work. And that’s the chat for 2027.
One senior service park source explained the situation to DirtFish: “It looks like the end of the road is here for CER. It’s difficult to keep the three nations together for funding – it was nice how it ran for us and we made a nice story, but now it looks to be the game for ADAC (Germany’s national sporting authority).
“It cannot be for next season, but going to [Nürburgring] Nordschleife for some stages and the service park is part of the plan for the future.”
DirtFish understands the route would also include vineyard stages west of Koblenz in the Eifel region.
The WRC was last held solely in Germany back in 2019
The source added: “We know, for sure, it’s not possible to be back to the [original] place for [Rally] Deutschland, but this plan would mean we were not too far north from Trier and Mosel roads. I think we can all remember the support this event was taking.”
Germany last hosted its own round of the world championship in 2019.
While the Nordschleife has never hosted a round of the WRC, there’s nothing new to rally cars running at the venue for promotional purposes. The Nürburgring itself has a 150,000 person capacity and plenty of space for a service park.
DirtFish understands ADAC is also considering the potential for a double-header weekend with a DTM (German touring car) race on the same bill.
DirtFish has contacted ADAC for comment.
