STI Lives: Subaru Unveils Two STI-Branded Concept Cars at Japan Mobility Show

Subaru is set to revive its STI performance badge with two exciting concept cars one electric and one gasoline-powered at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, hinting at a thrilling future for the iconic brand.

Subaru fans have cause to cheer as the legendary STI badge makes a dramatic comeback. At Japan’s Mobility Show later this month, the automaker is revealing two STI-branded concept cars showcasing the dual path of performance evolution: traditional gasoline and all-electric powertrains.

The fully electric model, dubbed Performance-E STI, embodies Subaru’s vision for a high-performance electric future. Sporting sharp, aerodynamic lines and a hatchback-like silhouette, it promises an electrifying drive paired with spacious, driver-focused interiors loaded with new technologies. Subaru calls it “the future of the Performance Scene,” blending brutal electric power with the brand’s signature driving pleasure.

In parallel, the Performance-B STI concept sticks to Subaru’s roots with a gasoline engine complemented by its symmetrical all-wheel-drive system. This five-door hatchback pays homage to the WRX STI heritage with wide fenders, a large rear wing, and a boxer engine under the hood. It promises to broaden Subaru’s performance offerings while maintaining the visceral appeal that enthusiasts cherish.

These near-production concepts tease what many hope is the return of the STI warhorse with a modern twist. The traditional petrol-powered hot hatch mixed with a cutting-edge electric counterpart signals Subaru’s intent to straddle the shifting landscape of emissions regulations without abandoning character.

The Japan Mobility Show opens October 29 in Tokyo, where Subaru’s president Atsushi Osaki will highlight their “Driving the Subaru Difference” mission encompassing these performance concepts alongside adventure-focused vehicles like the electric Trailseeker crossover.

After a few dry years following the WRX STI’s retirement in 2022, Subaru’s dual STI concepts demonstrate that performance is very much alive, adapting and evolving with the times but never losing its soul. The rallying cry for gearheads is clear: the STI saga continues, in gas and electricity.
