Sit back and witness five incredible battles we’ve seen at the magical Phillip Island over the years – proving anything can happen Down Under

The home of surprises, the home of final lap scraps, the home of drama – MotoGP™ has landed at Phillip Island. Excitement is building, and if last year was anything to go by it’s set to be an unmissable weekend. There have been so many memorable moments over the years, from shock penalties to final corner deciders, and now you can relive just some of those moments for FREE!

Valentino Rossi started the 2003 Australian GP from pole position in what would be a memorable day for more than one reason. Marco Melandri took an early lead before getting tangled with Troy Bayliss. Rossi would find himself at the front before the GP was turned on its head as the #46 received a 10-second penalty for overtaking under yellow flags. The reigning World Champion put down the hammer, beginning one of the most impressive performances we’ve ever seen. Rossi stretched the margin to 15.212s at the flag, making his official winning margin 5.212s over Loris Capirossi and Nicky Hayden.

Our trip to Phillip Island in 2004 brought another instalment of Valentino Rossi vs Sete Gibernau. It was drama from lights out, where, after a brave start, Gibernau and Rossi stormed into the distance. The pair locked horns until the final lap, with everything being decided on the run to the flag. Rossi snatched victory from Gibernau, winning by just 0.097s. This was enough for Rossi to become the 2004 MotoGP World Champion, completing the first chapter of what would become a remarkable switch to Yamaha.

The 2013 Australian GP was incredibly dramatic, with a mandatory bike swap in place for safety reasons. Lorenzo took the lead on the opening laps after launching from pole position. The key moment arrived when the field began to pit, with Marc Marquez remaining out until the end of Lap 11. This was outside the window, with the #93 receiving a black flag, resulting in a disqualification. Lorenzo would storm to victory, beating Dani Pedrosa and Valentino Rossi, but again the headlines were made from the #93’s incident.
