Car buyers around the world often surprise us. While we frequently look at the best-selling cars in the United States or the top global models, individual markets tell their own stories. Digging into local charts reveals some unexpected leaders, from the Porsche 911 (yes, in one country it really is number one) to the Dacia Sandero, Toyota Hilux, Kia Sportage, and BYD Atto 3.

Someone Call 911

These charts, compiled by industry analyst Felipe Munoz, break down the best-selling model in dozens of countries around the world for 2024.

Starting alphabetically, the biggest surprise is that the Porsche 911 was the best-selling new car in the Principality of Andorra last year, a clear reflection of the extraordinary wealth in this tiny landlocked nation nestled in the Pyrenees between France and Spain. Despite covering only about 181 square miles and having a population of roughly 82,000, Porsche still managed to sell 83 examples of the 911 series.

Second place went to a Toyota, not just any run-of-the-mill model, but the fire-breathing GR Yaris, while the Porsche Cayenne and Macan rounded out the top four, because apparently even in the mountains you can never have too many Porsches.

Pickups, Sedans, and Surprises

Elsewhere, we can see that in Aruba, the Kia Rio is the best-selling vehicle, while in Australia, it’s the Ford Ranger pickup truck, and over in Romania, it is the Dacia Logan. In many countries, including Bolivia, Cameroon, Chile, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guinea, and Iraq, among others, the Toyota Hilux dominates sales charts. Few vehicles can claim such a broad geographic fanbase.

EVs Take Their Ground

There are some other interesting takeaways from this data. In China, the BYD Qin was the nation’s best-selling vehicle last year, while over in EV-loving Denmark and Norway, it was the Tesla Model Y. In the Middle East, big SUVs are really popular, like the Nissan Patrol being the best-seller in the UAE, and the Land Cruiser 300 topping the charts in Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, and Kuwait.

There are also some cars you may have never guessed would be this popular. For example, the Geely Coolray, a small crossover, is the best-selling new vehicle in Belarus, while in Angola, it’s the Jetour X70. Over in Iran, you have the Sapia Quik, in the Ivory Coast, it’s the Suzuki Dzire, and in Malaysia, the Perodua Bezza topped the charts last year.
