Ferrari SF90 Breaks Speed Record on Deck of Italian Aircraft Carrier

Italian racing driver Fabio Barone set a new world speed record for the fastest car driven on a ship, piloting a specially modified Ferrari SF90 Stradale to 101.9 mph (164 km/h) on the flight deck of the Italian Navy’s aircraft carrier Nave Trieste. This attempt surpassed his previous record of 94.4 mph set last year on the predecessor carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi.

The record run took place near Rome on a 774-foot-long flight deck, which included a "ski-jump" ramp typically used for fighter jet takeoffs. The race was carefully planned over nine months, with about 160 hours of simulation and a 40-member support team that reinforced the car’s suspension and brakes to handle the unique conditions.

Despite the deck having been wet from previous rain, the crew worked quickly to dry the surface in time for Barone’s runs. The challenge was not just about topping the speed, but also ensuring enough distance to decelerate safely before the deck’s edge.

Barone praised the Ferrari’s hybrid powertrain and smooth handling, emphasizing the focus and coordination required to pilot the car at such speeds in this confined, high-risk environment.

This achievement adds to Barone’s legacy of unusual speed records involving Ferrari sports cars, spanning daring hillclimbs across the globe. The verified result will soon be submitted to Guinness World Records for official recognition.

The Ferrari SF90 Stradale, with a combined output of 1,000 horsepower from its twin-turbo V8 and electric motors, symbolizes cutting-edge hybrid supercar technology. This record run is a spectacular demonstration of the car’s performance and Barone’s exceptional driving skill.
