Russell had missed media duties earlier in the weekend and admitted his condition made the event particularly grueling. He credited the nature of the Baku Circuit, which is demanding but mentally less strenuous than some tracks, for enabling him to push through the pain and perform well.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff praised Russell’s resilience, noting he almost had to replace him with reserve driver Valtteri Bottas.
