AD FEATURE: Your job title could hike your car insurance costs by £400 but you can cut prices

Car insurance prices can be hiked up depending on your job title but Mirror Switch and Save (in partnership with Quotezone.co.uk) offers a simple way to compare policies and see if you can get the best deal for you

Brits are being warned by car insurance experts that their job title could see their premiums hiked up by around £400, a study from Quotezone has shown.

Mirror Switch and Save has partnered with Quotezone.co.uk who have revealed the job titles most commonly flagged as high-risk by insurers, including healthcare assistants, warehouse workers and even unemployed drivers.

While the typical UK driver pays around £664 per year for car insurance in 2025, unemployed drivers are quoted almost twice as much on average at £1,265.

Job titles including healthcare assistants, accountants, delivery drivers, company directors and chefs could all mean you risk paying premiums of over £1,000, around 60% higher than the UK average. Quotezone.co.uk explained that it could be because these roles all involve long hours, high stress or shift work; all of which are factors which insurers could associate with higher claims risks.

Retired drivers have also seen a sharp increase from £492 last year to £733 this year, possible as older driver premiums tend to escalate from 70 years of age onwards due to factors such as increases in medical conditions and incidents on the road.

The good news is that there is an easy way you can compare car insurance policies without having to pay a premium. The experts at Quotezone.co.uk have said that a slight change in your job title wording can impact pricing, because some providers can categorise roles differently.

For example, someone describing themselves as a 'Healthcare Assistant' might receive a different quote by selecting 'Care Assistant' or 'Care Worker' instead. It's worth noting that the title must remain accurate and reflect the role you are doing - but if it is a case of slight variation by your provider, it could help you reduce your premium.

You can check the wording when comparing car insurance policies to see if you can get the best deal available for you.

The data sample uses over 100,000 car insurance policies in 2025, filtered to the top 20 most popular jobs, looking at 25–55-year-olds with no claims or convictions, then compared year on year with the 2024 statistics.
