The most remarkable performance I’ve seen in 25 years of covering this sport. The context of this win makes it all the more incredible. A little under three weeks ago Solberg was preparing to tackle this event in a Rally2 car and yet with only two days testing he steps up to Rally1, dominates three world champions and, frankly, makes it look easy.
Solberg has always had the speed but he’s used the two and a half years since his ignominious sacking by Hyundai to fine-tune the many other aspects that are needed to make a champion.
Mark my words, this is no flash in the pan and the pressure is now on Toyota to sign him up to a full-time contract and get him back where he belongs as soon as possible.
